Respect of the Big Muddy   Grades: 2-5    2-In School Sessions

Session I:  Presented by Polk County Conservation.  Animals of Iowa -45 Minutes- What kind of animals live in Iowa? What kind of animals used to live in Iowa? Find out the answers to these and other questions.

Session II:  1 Hour  -Lead by Jim Boardman. The students will be introduced to the importance of the balance of nature. Humankind engaged with nature and not in opposition to it. This will be done through a story presentation of the wonders of nature as seen through the encounter of a skunk (Grandpa Skunk) and the great American explorer, naturalist and military officer, Captain Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis & Clark Expedition (1804-1806). Students will learn how to integrate historical and scientific fact with creative imagination and playfulness through interaction with the storyteller. They will be asked to create their own encounter on the bank of the “Big Muddy” (Missouri River) using facts about skunk characteristics and life style along with mimicking Captain Lewis by honoring their own observations and recording them in a journal.
